Some people may wonder why I list subtitling companies as well as captioning companies. The answer is simple: there is little difference. Subtitling software will frequently support closed captioning also. The skills involved are the same - putting words on the screen. You really shouldn't encourage the misapprehension that subtitling and captioning are so similar that subtitlers can do captioning and vice-versa.
These subtitlers doing open captioning you envisage – won’t they just use invariant bottom-centre positioning, limit titles to two lines no matter what kind of editing it requires, and leave out speaker IDs and non-speech information? In other words, won’t they simply impose their subtitler ideology on the separate field of captioning, which they look down on anyway?
