Newsweek On ITunes and no Captions

The current issue of Newsweek has a short article on iTunes and the lack of captions on iTunes video. Apple's whine is that it is technically difficult to incorporate captions on the iPod screens. To which I say, "go to h**l Apple!!" This tendency to make accessibility an afterthought instead of designing for it and having the product accessible upon initial release is why the deaf and hard of hearing community is going to fight HARD to get Congress to update the Telecommunications Act of 1996 to MANDATE that accessibility be included in all new telecommunications product development!!

Why should deaf and hard of hearing people be the only ones "locked" into being dependent on television show times, while the hearing world gets the freedom to download and watch what they want, anytime?

Now if only we could get Newsweek to use the proper term, "captions," instead of the incorrect term, "subtitles."

Captions on an ipod would be too small to read. Everything can't adapt to everyone. Digital TV recording devices are a good way to catch shows at any time. Oh.. and the poor are still stuck catching the show when it actually airs.
